Tips for Buying Meat at a Farmers Market

Farmers Market, Frisco Fresh Market, Vendors

When people think of shopping at a Farmers Market, visions of fresh produce, coffees, and homemade arts and crafts come to mind. Sure, all of these things can be found at your community market, but we offer so much more.

The meat selection at a Farmers Market is one that poses a wide variety of new tastes that can help create the perfect supplement to any of the produce you purchase from a local farmer.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Meat is something that you want prepped to perfection, and that starts with how the animals are raised. You want to put only the highest quality meats into your body, so remember to ask the important questions:

  • Where did the meat come from? Is it truly local?
  • Were the animals grass-fed?
  • What conditions did the animals live in?
  • How do you keep your meat frozen?

Any Farmers Market rancher will be able to tell you their story and help you decide if their meat is the cut that deserves to be at your dinner table.

Bring a Cooler

Unless your Farmers Market trip is the last stop of the day, you’ll want to invest in a decent cooler that will keep your meats frozen and fresh until your return home. Pack your cooler up with fresh ice or ice packs and try to keep the lid tight to preserve freshness.

Come Early if You Want Specific Cuts

Sometimes, people already know what they want from meat at a Farmers Market. They have specific vendors and desired cuts of meat in mind. However, customers must remember that markets are fair game, and most vendors aren’t going to be able to hold onto choice cuts for customers.

So, if you want something specific, remember how the early bird always catches the worm. Make sure you are one of the first customers of the day and leave the market with only the finest cuts of meat from your favorite provider.

Keep Your Meats Separate

You may want to store all of your perishables in your cooler, but improper storage puts you at risk of cross contamination. When you decide to pack your meats and produce into a cooler, bring some extra plastic bags that can serve as a protective barrier for your goods.

Current Rancher at the Market

Our current meat rancher is Farm to Freezer Meat Company. They are a family run business that offers fresh, wholesale beef direct from east Texas ranches. Farm to Freezer Meat Company has been with the Frisco Fresh Market since September 2020 and has been an excellent addition to our vendor and product base. If you are not a meat eater, you are in luck because we also have wonderful seafood available from B’s Seafood Shack. Check out their exciting selection at the market every Saturday and Sunday.
