6 Facts That Will Create a Produce Craving

Farmers Market, Produce

We all know that fruits and vegetables are the heart of a healthy lifestyle. However, as consumers, we often take for granted some of the interesting facts that add a little spice to our nutrition.

At Frisco Fresh Market, our vendors are passionate about the produce they provide to our communities. We thought these tidbits about our favorite fruits and vegetables were interesting enough to share with you and encourage you to bring these ingredients to your next family dinner!

  1. Tomatoes Aren’t Legally A Fruit

Sure, biologically, tomatoes are produce items that have seeds and are, therefore, deemed a fruit. However, in the eyes of the law, tomatoes are a vegetable.

As of 1893, a Supreme Court decision ruled that since tomatoes are regularly used in savory dishes, they are legally deemed a vegetable.

  1. Cayenne Pepper is Excellent for Your Blood

If you have a wound that simply doesn’t want to clot, experts say that it’s best to sprinkle a little bit of Cayenne Pepper over the area. Cayenne Pepper serves as nature’s gauze and will naturally begin to stop a wound’s bleeding.

  1. Bananas Are Actually Berries

When we think of berries, the usual suspects come to mind: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and the like. But did you know that bananas are also technically a member of the berry family?

According to Healthline.com, the makeup of bananas allows them to be both fruit and berry at the same time. The qualities that include them in the berry family are that they are:

  • Soft of skin
  • Fleshy in the middle
  • Riddled with small seeds
  1. Apples Can Energize You Better Than Coffee

Coffee drinkers, don’t worry, we still have your back with local flavors. However, if you want a surge of energy without the caffeine, we recommend taking a bite out of a fresh apple. The numerous minerals and vitamins that make up the body of an apple create the perfect energy-making concoction that attacks both the taste buds and your body’s endorphins.

  1. Watermelon Can Prevent Dehydration

Watermelons definitely live up to their name. Each melon is made up of 92 percent water and has the ability to effectively hydrate a person in need.

So, the next time you make plans for an outdoor summer event, always remember to be the person that saves the day from dehydration. Bring plenty of water and watermelon!

  1. It’s Hard to Gain Weight on Fruits and Vegetables, Alone

Yes, there are diets out there that dissuade participants from eating specific fruits and vegetables due to their carbohydrate makeup. However, the truth is that it would take hundreds of whole vegetables (i.e. broccoli, celery, and cauliflower) per day, alone, to hit the average 2,000 calorie diet.
